Peeling the Onion

Peeling the Onion

Our onchain actions are often revealed in layers. Anonymous addresses provide a basic level of privacy, but owners can be discovered through transactional association or other contextual clues. Contracts are compiled into bytecode, which is hard for humans to decipher at the machine level but fully transparent once a contract is verified.

Our browsing interactions and connections present another layer. Thankfully, Tor (The Onion Router) is built to protect our privacy when browsing the web. With Tor, traffic is routed through multiple nodes in the network, each removing a single layer of encryption during the multi-node journey.

No single node knows both the source and destination of the traffic, providing a safe path to anonymity for both users and website hosts.

This week, an Ethereum mainnet Blockscout instance was deployed to Tor network. This instance protects users who want to maintain their privacy on multiple layers when exploring the chain. It allows anyone to explore from anywhere, providing free and open access to the decentralized, global platform.

To browse Blockscout privately with Tor simply:

  1. Open eth.blockscout.com in Tor Browser.
  2. Tor detects the native service and shows the “.onion available” badge.
  3. Tap it to access the Tor-native version.
