APIs shouldn't break overnight

Unfortunately it happened last week when Etherscan suddenly removed free-tier API coverage for ~10% of chains they support. Many applications rely on these APIs to serve data to their users, and their removal without advanced warning left a lot of people and projects scrambling.

This incident also highlighted the centralization problem we've seen in various contexts (a Cloudflare outage a few days prior caused widespread issues across the entire internet). When one provider controls a large majority of traffic, resources, or processes, a single adverse event has the power to bring everything down.

It's a big reason Ethereum has advocated for and supports multiple clients, and why block explorers should be seen in a similar light. It's vital to have multiple explorers for every chain, providing redundancy, checks-and-balances, and access to different features that support their users.

Luckily, Blockscout provides free compatible API endpoints for chains that use our explorer, including OP and Base, and applications were able to quickly switch over to Blockscout APIs using our migration guide.

How to Migrate Your Etherscan API Calls to Blockscout
If your app uses Etherscan-style endpoints, switching to Blockscout is simple. Most calls are fully compatible, and in many cases the only change you’ll need is the base URL. This guide walks through the process step-by-step so you can migrate in minutes.

We were happy to provide a needed alternative, and understand that issues like this can happen at any time, and can hit any single service provider. However, the overall impact on users directly correlates to the degree of centralization.

It shows us once again that explorer diversity and greater alternate explorer visibility is needed to provide transparency, resiliency, and decentralization to the entire blockchain ecosystem.
